109 delicious dinners served, 122 pupils seated, 38 adults fed, crackers pulled and sprouts prepared.......must be Christmas lunch at Kelsale school... all good fun. Huge thanks to Lucy and the team in the kitchen for making it so special....
School is definitely in the Christmas Spirit and getting ready for the Carol Service at the church on Friday morning.

Guy Making 2013
After a mammoth collection of old clothes from some of the children and Mrs Taylor, this afternoon KS2 took to the car park armed with straw (provided by Mr Watts), string, sellotape, scissors and a lot of imagination to prepare guys for this year's village Fireworks display.
The guys are being judged during assembly in the morning by members of the local council and, looking at the afternoon efforts, they have a very tough job.
Just a reminder: Lanterns are for sale after school tomorrow night or on the night (Saturday 2nd November) from the meeting room in the village. Each lantern cost £2.

Our experience with African food
On Thursday 17th October, Ms Angela Pearce came in to the yr 5&6 class to show us, and let us taste, some African foods. First we tried some hot foods including pap, which is a staple maize porridge,we also had a taste of sous,a tomato and onion sauce, and lots more. Tasting the sweet foods and fruit was most probably our favorite moment.
She also stayed in to tell us some facts and answer questions about Africa, we all learnt a lot about it.
Did you know?
. In Africa you need to have shutters, sheets or blinds on the outside of your house because snakes can easily come in.
. Usually in Africa you speak at least 2 languages but sometimes more.
In conclusion we all had a lot of fun and we had an early dinner.

Harvest Festival
Today, Kelsale School held it's annual harvest festival. Families donated fresh fruit, vegetables, canned goods and other lovely goodies. Miss Dempsey and Mrs Brett spent yesterday afternoon putting together a lovely harvest table. Each class had organised and rehearsed songs, information, poems and prayers to perform to our guests. All children gave their very best and made everybody proud.
After school, volunteers stayed behind to pieces together food parcels which, come rain or shine, will be delivered to elderly members of the local community tomorrow morning.
Well done Kelsale!

Maasai Warriors.
We were so, so fortunate today to welcome The Maasai Warriors to Kelsale School.
The performance began with a welcoming prayer from the lead warrior, Richard. The children and staff were transfixed from the beginning.
The troop then continued with a series of dances, chants, farming whistles, songs and audience participation by a number of children and adults
.
The highlight of the performance had to be a jumping competition, used to demonstrate power and rank within the tribe. The warriors pitted themselves against some children and Mrs Walker and Mrs Taylor. Needless to say, the Maasai Warriors came out on top.
The troop then spent some time in each of the classrooms with the children answering questions and discussing their work. Four members of the troop ended up in Class 5 trying to locate the exact position of their homes in Kenya using Google maps!

This was an absolutely fantastic experience for all children and staff. The Warriors were both skilled and talented, but also kind and informative. We all had a fabulous time and thank Mrs Taylor for inviting them to come into school.
A huge thank you to the Maasai Warriors for sharing their time and talents with us.

Spellbinder 2013
Once again, we were extremely lucky to receive a visit from Spellbinder, ably assisted by John.
Spellbinder has captivated the children at school with his fabulous story telling abilities on previous occasions and today was no exception, as can be seen from the photos below.
KS2 enjoyed stories of dragons, princes and fantasy figures in the morning and KS1 were captivated by fairy tales and folk stories in the afternoon.
Unfortunately, due to ill health, Spellbinder lady was unable to join us this year, but Kelsale school wishes her well and we send our love and and hope for a speedy recovery for her.

Paired reading 2013
First blog post of the year. A little while coming but now we have settled back into the school year, I hope I will have many more opportunities to blog.
Class 1 and 5 have 'buddied up' for paired reading sessions once a week. The older child hears the younger child read. They ask questions about their reading book and discuss the pictures together. They then spend time looking at picture books and library books. As you can see from the pictures below, the time is enjoyed by all the children and a lovely relationship developed between the two children. This gives the new foundation children an older and familiar face in the playground and maintains the family feel of the school despite it's increase in size.

Blessing Service 2013
On this blistering hot Monday morning, the children alongside staff, parents, friends and family snaked their way to the church for the Leaver's Blessing service.
Rev. Andy lead the congregation in song and prayer and the Year 6 children read out a selection of their memories from their school career. Rev. Andy blessed the children ready for their new path onto a new school as well as blessings for Miss Ward and Mrs Pugh, both whom will be leaving us tomorrow.
A lovely, emotional service as a prelude to our leavers assembly tomorrow.

KS1 Trip to Minsmere
Sorry for the late post, but Mrs Gill took a lot of many very beautiful photos that took a while for us both to sort out.
KS1 had a fabulous and very hot day out at Minsmere on Wednesday. They spent the day pond dipping, beach combing and den building as well as other wonderful activities. The staff were very kind, friendly and informative and, as usual, the children were extremely well behaved.
A big thank you to all the adult helpers who made the day possible.

KS1 swimming demonstration and school picnic 2013
Parents of children in KS1 were invited to watch their children swim on Tuesday this week to see just how confident the children had become in the school pool. The weather was absolutely glorious.
This was followed by the School's annual picnic, where parents, relatives and friends could bring a picnic lunch with rugs to sit and enjoy each other company on the school field. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere and some very delicious looking lunches!

Eggs and Chicks.
Once again, the Hall family provided the school with, what we hoped would be, fertilised eggs to incubate and hatch at school. The incubators were placed in Classes 2 and 5.
On day 14 (out of 21), Andy came into school and lamped the eggs to see which of the eggs were most likely to contain chicks.
On day 20, we noticed cheeping noises coming from the eggs and tiny cracks and holes were starting to be made by the eggs occupants.
We watched eggcitedly throughout the day until finally, Sebastian was 'born'.
So far, 2 chicks have hatched in class 5 and 6 in class 2. More photos to follow.
Chick update:
A total of 9 chicks have now hatched (one with very fluffy feet).
To view a video of a chick hatching, click here.

Seaside special lunch
On Friday, Mrs Hall cooked a lovely seaside special lunch for us before Sports and Fete Afternoon. The children took their fish and chips in bags out onto the playground and ate together on the grass and benches.
Country Dancing Festival 2013
This morning classes 3 and 4 walked down to Carlton Park , Saxmundham, to take part in a country dancing festival. Despite the soaring temperatures, great fun was had by all.

Kelsale Sports Day and Fete 2013
The weather this year could not be more different from last sports day. Some cloud cover in the morning gave those setting up the fete some rest from the muggy weather.
The PTFA, children and other helpers spent the morning setting up stalls and organising ready for the afternoon.
At 1pm, the fete opened as Year 5 and 6 ran to man their stalls. Raffle tickets were bought, games played and castles and slides bounced on.
At 2pm, the children were called for the races. Mrs Ward's organisation and Miss Dempsey's voice mean a very smooth and enjoyable sports afternoon with Yellow team announced as the winners. Medals were handed out and the fete restarted.
Again, huge thanks to the PTFA, lead by Martin, for organising events, thank you to Mrs Ward for organising the sports day events, thank you to our sponsor's including Waitrose and Friday Street Farm Shop and thank you to the children and their friends and relatives for making this another very successful event. Totals raised will be announced when counted.

Race for Life 2013- The race!
Despite the very unpromising weather forecast, Race for Life went ahead. Waves of chatter and laughter hit the halls of school as costumes, wigs and headbands were revealed. Mrs Ward, staff and children set out the course and the cakes baked for the occasion were laid out for purchase.
Umbrellas were gathered together as the whole school set out for the field.
The initial splash of rain was soon forgotten as the tension and anticipation rose. A count down from 10 and we were off...
What followed was a fabulously heart warming afternoon. Giggles, perseverance, team work, friendship and a common goal. The race was completed by all and in variety of ways: running, walking, skipping and even a couple of laps in a wheelbarrow!
All who cheered on and took part seemed to feel a tremendous amount of pride, both in themselves and each other. Those who finished early continued to run with friends to urge them on to the finish line.
What an amazing and unique school!
A huge thank you to runners, walkers, wheelbarrow pushers, crowd, sponsors, cake bakers, stampers, photographers and a huge thank you to Mrs Ward for organising such a fantastic event as well as a most enjoyable sports week.

Sports Week 2013- Day 5
All fingers are crossed as the weather forecast is not looking promising for this afternoon's Race For Life.
This morning, sports week continued with golf lessons from Mrs Taylor and Mr Marson for years 3, 4, 5 and 6 out on the school field. They set up a driving range and a putting green and borrowed some clubs from Halesworth golf club.
Meanwhile, Miss Coppens-Browne's class performed their finished and polished cheerleading routinues to the rest of their class.

Erin-Lea Murphy visit 2013
Kindly, Erin-Lea from Erin-Lea Murphy School of Dance agreed to come into school and help KS1 to strut their stuff as part of our Sports Week. Aided by teachers and support staff, all children and adults showed their very best moves and had a fantastic afternoon.
Lets all hope for good weather tomorrow afternoon for Race for Life 2013.

New Foundation 2013
Transition morning included a visit from our new foundation pupils. It must have been a very daunting task, to walk into a bustling school building full of very tall children but all were made very welcome by our fabulous resident pupils, especially the current foundation children who spent the morning showing everyone the ropes.
All left school smiling and very much looking forward to returning full time in September. We look forward to seeing them too.

Sports Week 2013- Day 3- Athletics afternoon
In order to win the team cup, all 4 colour teams, red, blue, green and yellow, need to compete in a range of activities. These include swimming, sports day races and, today's event, Athletics afternoon. The afternoon's activities were organised by Mrs Ward. The school was divided up into 8 teams and a rotation of activities were undertaken. Each team was lead by an adult team leader.
Each group showed tremendous team spirit, perseverance and a great deal of competitiveness, and that was just from the staff members! Despite the enormous amount of hard work that went into organising, leading and guiding the afternoon to a very successful conclusion, all children had enormous fun and should all sleep well tonight.
All points will be tallied and final results revealed at Sports day afternoon in July.
Please remember to sponsor us for our Race For Life on Friday afternoon. Click the link below to reach our just given page.

Sports week 2013- Days 1 and 2
The school's annual sports week began with a bang this week. Mrs Ward has been very busy planning a fun packed week.
We kicked off with a fabulous visit from Mariette Rix, a South African Olympic hockey player who played in both Beijing 2008 and London 2012. She came into school and spent time coaching the Years 3-6. She was a very kind and patient lady; an excellent teacher with a wealth of knowledge and skills to share and we were very fortunate.
Meanwhile, Mr Laws and some young sports leaders arrived from Alde Valley High School with Tchoukball equipment and spent time with Mrs Drew and the Year 3 class. We have been allowed to keep the equipment for the week so all classes can use it.
Class 5 began work on their synchronised swimming routine. They worked in small groups to plan their spectacle on dry land before practicing their initial ideas in water for the first time. More practice sessions and a final performance are planned in for the week.
Today began outside in the sunshine with Class 4 trying out some qwik cricket on the field. It would seem we have some natural bowlers and batsman.
During the day, The Sensei from Saxmundham Karate club came into school to work with Classes 3, 4 and 5. He impressed all with his skills and the children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. Those who already attend his club could be seen demonstrating their skills.
Meanwhile, Mr Holt kindly came back to visit for the afternoon and led KS1 in a new morris dancing routine designed especially for the occasion. The children spent the afternoon out on the playground, in the sunshine, carrying out some complicated footwork, banging their sticks in time joined by Mr Holt in full costume.
It is hard to believe that it is only Tuesday and we still have 3 days of sports week left to go. We literally cannot wait!

The School Garden
For those who have not had the opportunity to visit it, the school garden and poly tunnel are in full bloom. Mrs Taylor and her loyal army of green fingered helpers have done a wonderful job filling the garden with a multitude of fruits and vegetables, some of which have already been used, eaten and enjoyed.
If you have not been to see it, feel inspired by the photos below and pay a visit to the garden soon.

Year 6 Wardens camping trip 2013- Day 2
After a very, very early start for most, including Mrs Taylor, the first cups of tea were made. Mrs Taylor had a very quick breakfast and then joined the other teachers at school to greet our visitors, leaving with a bag of biscuits.
After a good breakfast, all washed and dressed for the day. Despite an earlier heavy downfall of rain, we decided to pack up our lunch and head for Thorpeness. A little shower on the way didn't dampen our spirits as we spent time beach combing and discussing the evident coastal erosion, the part plants had to play in erosion reduction and some of the new sea defenses put in place by some of the local residents.
On arrival, we headed straight to the boats. Life jackets on and an hours fun but exhausting rowing around the mere. We stopped for lunch and ice-creams and walked back in the lovely sunshine.
We were stopped by three members of the public, all retired from the education system, shortly after lunch. They said they needed to tell us how well behaved and calm all our children were and how impressed they were with their good manners. Once again, Kelsale children make us proud.
We are currently having a snack and preparing for dinners tonight with some quite tired but happy children. Photos are being added to the slideshow all the time son please keep checking back.
All children are safe, well and smiling. We are all hoping for a good nights sleep!

Year 6 Wardens Camping Trip 2013- Day 1
First thing we did was put up the tents, which took a while, and then, once everyone had a tent to sleep in, we all unloaded our bedding and set our beds up with help from Mr and Mrs Appleton and Emma Roberts (THANK YOU!). The first activity we did was kite making. While doing kite making we had to first design our kites by folding, cutting and lots of sellotaping. Once we had done our designs we were allowed to start making our best copies. We went to the beach twice; 1st time was just to paddle at ankle height but some came back with a few wet clothes. The 2nd time we went was to make big art using materials found across the stones and sand on the beach area and then took some photos from the cliff top.
We had lot's of help in the kitchen from willing volunteer's to help prepare dinner. We had salad, including tomato, lettuce, cucumber and grated carrot, and vanilla crunch for pudding and pizza for the main. Everyone is enjoying themselves so far and loved their dinner, wanting more.
By Grace Watts, Sophie Appleton and Alicia Whiting.
P.S From Mrs Mansell.
Everyone is well, full up and looking slightly tired (!). All children have been exceptionally well behaved as usual and are looking forward to a night under canvas.

Father's Morning
In celebration of Father's Day this coming Sunday, Dads and other male friends and relatives were invited into school to take part in collaborative activities. The Dads were put to the test in a variety of fields:
Rounders, maths investigations, engineering and ICT control technology.
As you can see from the photos below, a fantastic time was had by all. A big thank you to all those who came and shared our morning with us.

Race For Life 2013
Mrs Ward has once again organised a Race For Life at Kelsale School. On Friday 28th June in the afternoon, as a grand finale to our sports week, all children from school plus any friends, relatives who would like to join in will take part in the 5km run, jog, walk, crawl, be pushed etc... all in aid of Cancer Research UK. After the success of last year, we hope to raise £1500 for this fantastic charity.
To raise money or add a sponser, you have 2 options. Either see Mrs Ward for a sponsor form or refer friends and family to the school's Just Giving site:
Please grab your pink clothes, raise as much sponsor money as you can and join us all on the school field.
Thank you.

Kelsale cum Carlton Coronation Fete 2013
This afternoon, despite a lack of sunshine, the village came together to celebrate 60 years since the Queen's coronation in the form of a village fete.
There were many stalls, games, a karate demonstration, dog show and a selection of competitions to enter as well as an abundance of locally sourced food and drink.
The local youth club organised a series of children's races with rosettes for winners and runner up places, and the afternoon was rounded off with a tug- of- war.
A fantastic afternoon was enjoyed by all those who attended. I'm sure a great deal of money was raised. All the proceeds will go to the village hall restoration fund

End of Half Term Assembly
It has been a very busy half term, with tests and assessments being completed in all classes. It is very easy to forget that we have been very busy learning this half term as well. As a way of reminding ourselves of the new and interesting things we have been up to and to 'show off' our hard work to our family and friends, Mrs Taylor organised an end of half term assembly.
The hall was absolutely packed with adults and children and there was a very jovial feel to the whole afternoon.
We saw all manner of work from songs to paintings to ICT prowess to island retreats to extensive research.
A big thank you to all how attended. We look forward to seeing all the children on Monday, well rested and ready for more hard work and fun!

Music Day 2103
Children in Year 4 plus our 'Play On' group, all of whom take guitar lessons at school with Mr Osborne went to Alde Valley High School yesterday to take part in a Music Day. They were accompanied by Miss Coppens-Browne, Miss Pugh and Miss Dempsey. The children had prepared pieces of music, both in lesson time and in their own time, to practice and play in front of an audience.
They spent the morning listening to other primary schools rehearsing and practicing their pieces. A quick break for lunch...
...and the children were back to work.
The two groups of children finally performed their pieces. The clip below shows the 'Play On' group performing their piece, which they chose, practiced and perfected themselves.
Once again, our children behaved impeccably. They worked hard and performed beautifully. A huge thank you to the adults and children for representing the school and making us very proud.

An Antarctic Adventure
Pupils were extremely fortunate to receive a visit from Flo Barrow.
Flo had recently returned from her very own Antarctic adventure. She and a group of 3 others made the, sometimes treacherous and long, journey to the South pole. Here she worked as a Post Mistress in the Antarctic's very own Post Office whilst spending time repairing and maintaining the buildings on the Banana Belt. She retold her stories of up close (sometimes too close) and incredible visits from the Gentoo, Adelie and Chinstrap penguins. She shared some very special photos.
She was a fascinating and very kind lady with some amazing stories to tell. She was very inspirational (particularly to some of our Year 6 girls) and we look forward to some possible correspondence if and when she makes the return trip to the pole.

Mr Lumb's Visit
The children in Class 1 have been learning about people who help us and thinking about the jobs they would like to do when they are older. They have spent time learning about Sir Robert Peel and how he set up the Metropolitan police.
So far, they have learnt about the uniforms, equipment and what a policeman's job entailed when the police force was initially set up.
The children were very excited when Mr Lumb, who has recently retired, came into class to share his journey as a police officer of 31 years. They excitedly tried on different hats, a gas mask and riot gear. They also saw some truncheons, handcuffs, police whistles and his medals.
It was an invaluable experience to hear what it is really like to be a police officer, the types of work they do and the importance of the law. A huge thank you to Mr Lumb for giving up his spare time to reminisce with us.

Egg Decoration Day 2013
Eggstreme sports 2013 was once again a huge success. A combination of canoeing, skiing zip wiring, catapulting and parachuting meant that some of our elaborately decorated eggs did not make it through to the end of the afternoon. Despite the bitterly cold weather, a number of parents arrived to watch the eggs compete. Winners were announced in each of the sports and prizes awarded.
We were surprised towards the end of the afternoon with a phone call from the Easter bunny who had heard that all the children had been working hard and collaborated well together. It seems the bunny had hidden some bundles of eggs around the school playground. The children eggcitedly (!) raced to find them.
A huge thank you to all those who supported the event and another enormous thank you and well done to our amazing pupils.

Mothering Sunday Service 2013
A foggy morning did not deter our, now much larger, school heading off towards the village church with staff, parents and other family members and friends.
Our 'Mothers's are amazing' service consisted of poems and songs written and performed by the children all giving thanks to our wonderful Mum's. This was followed by some information from Rev, Andy on inspirational Mums from around the world. A last prayer and we set off back to school for play (and a lovely cup of tea for the adults. Despite a few minor hiccups with a stuck- in- the-mud car, all arrived safely back to school.

Happy 1st Birthday!
I was just about to make a start on the photos and videos from today's events. when it occurred to me that one year ago, I posted the very first Kelsale CEVCP blog post covering the events of The Mothering Sunday Service.
In the last year, we have posted 56 posts (that is more than 1 exciting event per week) and I can't begin to even imagine how many photos have been taken!
A huge thank you to all those that view, helped with and appreciated the blog. Please remember to subscribe by inputing your details to the right of this post to be immediately informed if a new post is blogged.

Victorian Day
Kelsale school welcomed another exciting visitor into lessons today. Mr Alan Murphy, a 'Victorian Headmaster' arrived early this morning with his equipment to set up a Victorian classroom.
The day begun with an assembly with Mr Murphy as he demonstrated the various ways a Victorian teacher may have maintained control over his class and corrected the behaviour of disruptive children.
Years 3 and 4 then dressed up in typical costume for the period and spent the morning in the Victorian school.
The children were encouraged to bring in a traditional school child's lunch (Big thank you to all parents who took the time to provide this) consisting of bread, cheese and an apple. Many of the lunches were wrapped in tea towels and brown paper. Lunch time for KS2 looked amazing.
In the afternoon, it was the turn of Years 5 and 6.
They dressed in the traditional costumes and filled into the hall, girls on one side, boys on the other.
The had lessons in each of the four 'R' s:
Reading
wRiting
aRthimetic
Religion
They used sand in tray's, slates and stylus, ink and pens. They had to recite tables by rote and calculated using farthings, pounds, shillings and pence.
After lessons, the children had the opportunity to play with some traditional Victorian games: Hoopla, pick up sticks, spinning tops, jacks, flip books, cup and ball and so on.
We would like to thanks Mr Murphy for the fantastic educational experience as we all learnt a great deal. A big thank you to all the parents who supported the events and to Miss Coppens-Browne for organising the day. A fabulous time was had by all.

Class 2 presents 'Jack and The Beanstalk'.
As part of their Literacy topic, Mr Ledgerwood and the children in Class 2 have been studying the classic tale of 'Jack and The Beanstalk'. This has included many fantastic reading and writing activities and even a visit from the giant himself. The children were very glad to realise, after a very strenuous interview, that the giant was actually very friendly.
As a very fitting and exciting conclusion to the topic, the children have produced their own photo story of the tale were they were the authors, narrators and even the stars of the film.
Please watch and enjoy.

Winter Warmer Lunch
On Wednesday, Mrs Hall cooked a very beautiful Winter Warmer Lunch for us. As part of the theme, the children were given the chance to wear their woolly hats whilst eating their Toad in the Hole and double choc chip cake with chocolate sauce.
The event was a huge success with lots of children opting for school lunch (including several of the staff). The children thoroughly enjoyed the event, as we can see from the pictures below.

RE lesson with Rev. Andy
Today, Rev. Andy Wolton came into school to share some of his symbols and artefacts with KS1. Aided by Mr Ledgerwood, the children learnt about the importance and relevance of different colours and symbols to Christians.

Snowball Fight!
There I was talking about our fabulous children, and one snowball later, (thrown by Mrs Taylor I hasten to add) a torrent of snow was flying it's way across the main playground.
Following tradition, a snowball fight can only be instigated by our headteacher, after which, the children can freely hunt down their teachers and other adults and a good spirited snowball fight follows.
Children and adults alike dripped and squelched their way home after a fantastically enjoyable, snowy day.

Snowy Breaktime
This leads me up to today and playtime fun. All the children and a selection of not-so reluctant teachers (including poor Mr Ledgerwood on his first morning at Kelsale) wrapped up in many layers, wellies and headed for the field.
Expectations for the quality of snowmen were high as various teams got started around the field. Team-work, coordination and a huge amount of effort lead to some impressively tall snowmen.
What a lucky school we are to have such fabulous children.

Christmas Church Service
The next of my photo finds. The Christmas church service.
The whole school plus an army of parents and other friends and relatives walked down to the church on a lovely Friday morning.
Rev. Andy Wolton welcomed us to the church and then we sang a selection of traditional Christmas as The Year 6 children retold the Christmas story. It was a truly beautiful time. Friends and families together, very festive children and very proud parents and teachers. We all walked back to church with a warm, fuzzy feeling.

KS2 Christmas party
Having some fantastic shots of today's snow fun, I found several other photos on the cameras from the Christmas celebrations I had not shared with you. So, sorry for the delay, but hopefully you can appreciate the photos as a reminder of a fabulous Christmas period.
We start with The KS2 party from the last week of term.
We begun the afternoon with a selection of party games: Carrying smarties to the hat...on a spoon...in your mouth...walking backwards. Less like a Christmas party and more like an episode of the Krypton Factor, but the children cheered their team on and enjoyed the game. This was followed by some balloon games and the snowman game. This gives the children the opportunity to turn an adult into a snowman. The team with the neatest snowman wins. Great fun!
This was followed by a tea party and a good old sing and dance. A fabulous afternoon.
