On Thursday 17th October, Ms Angela Pearce came in to the yr 5&6 class to show us, and let us taste, some African foods. First we tried some hot foods including pap, which is a staple maize porridge,we also had a taste of sous,a tomato and onion sauce, and lots more. Tasting the sweet foods and fruit was most probably our favorite moment.
She also stayed in to tell us some facts and answer questions about Africa, we all learnt a lot about it.
Did you know?
. In Africa you need to have shutters, sheets or blinds on the outside of your house because snakes can easily come in.
. Usually in Africa you speak at least 2 languages but sometimes more.
In conclusion we all had a lot of fun and we had an early dinner.

Harvest Festival
Today, Kelsale School held it's annual harvest festival. Families donated fresh fruit, vegetables, canned goods and other lovely goodies. Miss Dempsey and Mrs Brett spent yesterday afternoon putting together a lovely harvest table. Each class had organised and rehearsed songs, information, poems and prayers to perform to our guests. All children gave their very best and made everybody proud.
After school, volunteers stayed behind to pieces together food parcels which, come rain or shine, will be delivered to elderly members of the local community tomorrow morning.

The blog is up and running, ready to document and share another very exciting school year. Maasai Warriors.
We were so, so fortunate today to welcome The Maasai Warriors to Kelsale School.
The performance began with a welcoming prayer from the lead warrior, Richard. The children and staff were transfixed from the beginning.
The troop then continued with a series of dances, chants, farming whistles, songs and audience participation by a number of children and adults
.
The highlight of the performance had to be a jumping competition, used to demonstrate power and rank within the tribe. The warriors pitted themselves against some children and Mrs Walker and Mrs Taylor. Needless to say, the Maasai Warriors came out on top.
The troop then spent some time in each of the classrooms with the children answering questions and discussing their work. Four members of the troop ended up in Class 5 trying to locate the exact position of their homes in Kenya using Google maps!

This was an absolutely fantastic experience for all children and staff. The Warriors were both skilled and talented, but also kind and informative. We all had a fabulous time and thank Mrs Taylor for inviting them to come into school.

Spellbinder 2013
Once again, we were extremely lucky to receive a visit from Spellbinder, ably assisted by John.
Spellbinder has captivated the children at school with his fabulous story telling abilities on previous occasions and today was no exception, as can be seen from the photos below.
KS2 enjoyed stories of dragons, princes and fantasy figures in the morning and KS1 were captivated by fairy tales and folk stories in the afternoon.
Unfortunately, due to ill health, Spellbinder lady was unable to join us this year, but Kelsale school wishes her well and we send our love and and hope for a speedy recovery for her.

Paired reading 2013
First blog post of the year. A little while coming but now we have settled back into the school year, I hope I will have many more opportunities to blog.
Class 1 and 5 have 'buddied up' for paired reading sessions once a week. The older child hears the younger child read. They ask questions about their reading book and discuss the pictures together. They then spend time looking at picture books and library books. As you can see from the pictures below, the time is enjoyed by all the children and a lovely relationship developed between the two children. This gives the new foundation children an older and familiar face in the playground and maintains the family feel of the school despite it's increase in size.
